Veel gamers (waaronder redacteur Little) vroegen zich af of het wel een verstandige zet van Treyarch is om een niet-lineare verhaallijn te gebruiken in de nieuwe Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. John Rafacz (Director of Communications, Treyarch) legt uit dat dit allemaal wel mee zal vallen.

De gamers die erop tegen waren, zijn vooral de singleplayer-fanaten die houden van dat ene geweldige-verhaal, dan meerdere oppervlakkige verhalen. Rafacz legt uit dat de hoofd-campaign linear is en dat deze hetzelfde zal zijn voor elke gamer. Daarnaast zullen er een aantal non-lineare verhaallijnen zijn die bij iedereen dus zal afwijken van wat een ander meemaakt.

"So there is two types of campaign missions and the Strike Force missions themselves will be non-linear but will not be a part the normal campaign mode storyline. The Black Ops 2 story line will have two main story lines like many movies featuring a parallel sub story that enhances the main storyline. In other words, the game’s main campaign storyline will be linear and play out exactly the same for everyone and the non-linear story line will not be the same for everyone. This type of branching storylines is one of many innovation in Black Ops II."
