Een redacteur van Gamer.nl schreef een mooi stuk over Infinity Ward, wat we graag met ons publiek willen delen:
Voor een studio die zich bezighoudt met enkel één licentie, is Infinity Ward een opmerkelijk grote speler in de game-industrie. Maar hoe je het ook wendt of keert, een nieuwe Infinity Ward-game staat, ondanks de geringe innovatie, altijd garant voor kwaliteit. Vandaar een klein stukje geschiedenis over een van de belangrijkste westerse ontwikkelaar in de hedendaagse industrie.
Inmiddels is iedere gamer bekend met de Call of Duty-serie, maar dat is wel eens anders geweest. Er waren namelijk tijden dat niet Call of Duty, maar Medal of Honor het ‘oorlogsgenre’ domineerde. Met name Medal of Honor: Allied Assault werd bedolven onder lovende kritieken en hoge cijfers. Met als hoogtepunt de 10- van het ooit nog toonaangevende gamesblad Game Informer. Electronic Arts kon tevreden zijn.
De invasie van de geallieerden in Allied Assault
De geboorte van een studio
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is zonder twijfel een van de hoogtepunten in de franchise. Ook in de game zelf ontbrak het niet aan hoogtepunten. Toch was er met name één scene die er boven uitsprong en nog jaren als blauwdruk voor andere gamescenario’s zou dienen: de invasie op Omaha Beach. Zo heftig hadden we oorlog niet eerder meegemaakt. Opspringend strandzand, ontploffende granaten en doodvallende teamgenoten vulden het scherm. Het enige wat je kon doen was rennen voor je leven.
Het is je waarschijnlijk al opgevallen, maar de beschreven scène in Allied Assault heeft vrij veel weg van de gemiddelde Call of Duty-game. Toeval? Nee, niet echt. Dit derde deel in de Medal of Honor-reeks werd namelijk ontwikkeld door 2015. Na de lancering van Allied Assault ging een groot aantal werknemers en leidinggevenden van 2015 op zoek naar een nieuwe uitdaging. In 2002 startten zij in het plaatsje Encino in Californië daarom een nieuwe studio: Infinity Ward. Een legendarische studio is geboren.
De roep van de plicht
Het net uit de grond gestampte bedrijf besloot om door te gaan met waar ze goed in waren: het maken van meeslepende oorlogsgames. Daartoe kwamen zij in 2003 met Call of Duty, een shooter die zich afspeelde tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog dat het Hollywood blockbustergevoel als geen andere game wist te benaderen. Call of Duty werd net als Allied Assault een gigantisch commercieel succes en scoorde mondiaal meer dan tachtig Game Of The Year-prijzen.

Na het succes van het eerste deel kon Infinity Ward een opvolger vanzelfsprekend niet achterwege laten. In 2005 lanceerde Activision (dat de studio in 2003 had opgekocht) Call of Duty 2. Het vervolg werd geprezen door zijn gigantische veldslagen en prachtige graphics. Toch was het voornamelijk de multiplayer die zich tot klassieker ontwikkelde. Call of Duty 2 zette een grootse community op de been die vandaag de dag nog steeds actief is. Zowel op de PC als Xbox 360 kweekte Infinity Ward met Call of Duty 2 een gigantische fanbase.
Moderne oorlog
En toen was het eventjes stil rondom de studio. Toch leefde Call of Duty voort, maar helaas moest Infinity Ward de serie daar wel voor uit handen geven. Ontwikkelaar Treyarch nam het derde deel op zich en tot verbazing van de gehele PC-gemeenschap verscheen de game enkel op de consoles. Een kleine troost: Call of Duty 3 kon zich bij lange na niet meten met zijn twee uitstekende voorgangers. Maar hierdoor kreeg Infinity Ward wel voldoende tijd om zich op het vervolg te richten: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Een vervolg dat, zoals de naam al impliceert, voor het eerst afstand nam van de ‘vertrouwde’ jaren veertig.
Al bij het tweede deel wilde Infinity Ward overstappen naar een moderne setting. Activision wilde hier echter niets van weten en beloofde de studio de middelen om voor spelcomputers te kunnen ontwikkelen als ze toch bij de Tweede Wereldoorlog zouden blijven. Bij deel 4 probeerde Infinity Ward het opnieuw, wederom tegen de wensen van Activision in. De uitgever hield zelfs een marketingonderzoek om te laten zien dat mensen niet zaten te wachten op een moderne oorlog. Gelukkig wist Infinity Ward Activision te overtuigen van haar eigen idealen. Als je alleen maar succesgames maakt, dan verwerf je het recht op meer vrijheid.

Hoe dat is afgelopen weten we natuurlijk allemaal. Call of Duty 4 werd het bestverkochte schietspel ooit en nu, twee jaar later, belooft het vervolg precies hetzelfde te doen. Er wordt nu in ieder geval al gesproken over de grootste entertainmentuitgave ooit. Het verkoopproces zal overigens niet onomstreden verlopen, aangezien Infinity Ward’s oudste achterban – de PC-gemeenschap – veel opties uit het eerste deel in Modern Warfare 2 ziet verdwijnen. Men roept zelfs op tot een boycot.
Terecht? Dat oordeel mag je zelf vellen. Het toont in ieder geval aan dat de studio niet onschendbaar is – dergelijke keuzes vallen niet in de smaak bij de trouwe fanbase en dat kan Infinity Ward in de toekomst nog kwalijk genomen worden. De ontwikkelaar mag zich hoe dan ook tot een van de belangrijkste spelers in de game-industrie rekenen. En dat is wel degelijk terecht. Er zijn tegenwoordig namelijk nog maar weinig ontwikkelaars waarvan het studiologo te allen tijde als kwaliteitszegel beschouwd kan worden.

| Ik vind MW2 een goed geslaagde game, we verwachtten er alleen te veel van waardoor het in de ogen van veel mensen er slecht uit ziet. Ik vermaak me prima met MW2 en dat blijf ik me nog wel een paar maanden doen |

mooi stuk. Ik wist ook niet dat iw zo was begonnen. Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, dat waren nog een spellen. Daar heb ik uren lang achter gezeten  Maar met de tweede wereldoorlog was het ook wel een keer goed geweest. Ik ben blij dat ze met cod4 toen met de moderne setting zijn begonnen. WO2 werd naar mijn mening te ''ouderwets''. En ik heb over MW2 helemaal niks te klagen. Ik vind het een super spel. Dit spel speel ik nog wel een jaartje, en misschien nog wel langer |
