| Column - Modden voor je plezier! |

Voordat ik aan mijn column begin - waar jullie uiteraard al maanden naar uitkeken - zal ik mij even vluchtig voorstellen als jullie nieuwe columnist. Ik heb verder weinig tot geen ervaring met columns, maar ik hoop beter te worden naarmate de tijd vordert. Hoe dan ook, ik zal mijn columns richten op level-design, mods/modding en de gameindustrie.
Mijn naam is Jos a.k.a. Major Pain, woonachtig op de Veluwe (Gelderland) en level-designer voor alweer een aantal jaar. Momenteel ben ik bezig met een project om te gaan solliciteren bij Infinity Ward in Los Angeles.

COLUMN: MODDEN VOOR JE PLEZIER!
Door de jaren heen heb ik vele modificaties (mods) zien komen en gaan. Zelf heb ik uiteraard ook vele mods bijgewoond of zelfs leiding aan gegeven. Met de grootste plezier heb ik mogen werken voor games als Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Call of Duty, Call of Duty United Offensive en nu Call of Duty 2, iets waar ik spoedig mijn werk van hoop te maken.
Echter, één ding liep altijd als een rode draad door de mods en de jaren heen. Het viel mij helaas vaak op dat de modders het als een soort verplichting zagen om een mod te creëeren. Een soort verplichting naar de community of zichzelf toe om iets vernieuwends te maken. Ik snap die bedoeling wel, want er is een grote behoefte aan vernieuwing of iets origineels. Maar dat is een ander verhaal.
Wat ik wel degelijk als belangrijk beschouw, is dat deze modders vergeten dat het een hobby is om iets leuks te maken. Dat het een hobby is waar je plezier in hebt. En niet iets omdat de community het zo graag wil . Ik weet het nog goed in de periode van MoH:AA dat men elkaar hielp, zelf dingen uitprobeerde, en kon werken als een team.
Tegenwoordig is het al gauw dat wanneer er een probleem geplaatst wordt, dat er pas 5 maanden later gevraagd wordt of het probleem al opgelost is. Misschien is dit een vorm van arrogantie of laksheid, maar naar mijn mening kan dit gekoppeld worden aan het niet als een hobby zien .
Modden is net zo goed een hobby als modelbouw of postzegels verzamelen. Dus ik snap die mentaliteit niet.
Ik heb onlangs een modificatie gestart (sorry geen info hierover), waarbij het team verwacht wordt plezier te hebben in het modden. Plezier in iets wat je ook daadwerkelijk graag doet. Als je het als een verplichting gaat zien, mag je van mij ophoepelen. Want wat is er niet prachtiger dan samen naar een probleem kijken, het oplossen en zo samen er iets prachtigs van maken?
Dus mijn boodschap aan alle modders: Heb plezier in je werk! |

| Leuk!! Je hebt helemaal gelijk, het geldt heus niet alleen voor modders.. Het geldt voor al het werk, je moet er plezier in hebben, anders komt het niet goed! Leuk dat je zo n big issue in iets veel kleiners weet te verwoorden.. |

| Major Pain, echt zonde dat je bij IW gaat solliciteren, je verdient wel wat beters. Maar wel succes, misschien breng je ze eindelijk wat verstand naar binnen. |

| Helaas is het tegenwoordig ook zo (bij Shooters, maar ook bij RPG s als Neverwinter Nights en Oblivion), dat mods worden gecanceled wegens te weinig motivatie, terwijl de mod echt potentie had vet te worden! dat is echt zo erg jammer!
